This bulletin is actually a 2-in-1 which includes our Wind-up BBQ at Past-president Mike's place on June 19 and our final meeting of the Rotary year on June 26. I will use this section of the bulletin to report on the BBQ on June 19. I will try to be brief ... June 19 was the nicest day we had had this season (in my opinion) and a perfect night for a BBQ. When I arrived the BBQ were all ready to go, food was laid out on the back deck and chairs and tables were set for the mingling members and guests. The food was put on the BBQ, folks topped up there wine and other cold drinks and we sat for a fantastic meal! Following the fun and fellowship, we gathered in the Jennings family room for the more formal part of the evening. PP (past-president) Mike got things going with some Happy Toonies - Larry was happy because he continued his winning streak. -Kathi had a happy/sad toonie - Happy to be with us tonight but sad that it will be her second last official meeting with us as she joins the Mississauga Rotary Club. But, alas, I am sure we will still continue to see Kathi on her visits into our region. PP Mike welcomed everyone to the Jenning's abode and proceeded to hand out the perfect attendance pins as follows: Laureen - 1yr, Mike - 2 yrs, Allan Fox - 20 yrs! and finally Peter 33 yrs !!! Guests - Besides our respective partners and spouses who are infinitely important to us (and I didn't get a list) we also had a prospective member Jimmy and his wife Cassie (guests of Larry's). Our deserved Rotarian of the Year was Stephen, who as club secretary, has provided wise counsel to Mike and kept him on the straight and narrow for the last 2 years. The Paul Harris Fellow was awarded to Peter Ashenhurst. David Mitten produced a presentation - with Peter's help - on the life and times of Peter. Here it is in brief: - Born in 1943. Peter's father was an engineer and land surveyer and would eventually buy the business (and sell it in due time and retire to Cambridge). Peter grew up in Hamilton and met his wife, Barbara, who was studying engineering at MacMaster University. -Rotary involvement - began in 1983 when Charmaine (Peter and Barb's daughter) went on a Rotary exchange to Mexico. They have since hosted 15 students and attended many weddings of their exchange students around the world. - Peter has been to 12 RI conventions and is one of the organizer of the largest ribfest in Ontario - Burlington Ribfest. He is also an architect of the Cambridge Ribfest. - In 2017, Peter had open-heart surgery and this has limited some of his travels. - He is currently Chair of the speaker committee. And we are most fortunate to have Peter as a member of Cambridge North! Mike Jennings was also awarded a PH Fellow. Mike announced that David Mitten will be resigning from the club after 45 years of membership in Rotary. David was a founding member of Cambridge North Rotary and we will miss him dearly. In his words, David declared that Rotary is "the greatest organization in the world". Thank, David, for all your service, friendship and fellowship. Mike presented David with gift card to SAIL as a small gesture of gratitude. The evening ended with the exchange of pins between the incoming and outgoing presidents, Laureen and Mike. Laureen also presented Mike with plaque for his 2 years + service as President. |
