OPENING CEREMONIES
Today was my turn to write the Bulletin however the heavy traffic on Hespeler Road conspired against me and I missed the start of the meeting. David Mitten the Editor in Chief had already prepared a summary. I understand that Jody Moore led the singing of O Canada, Sean Carragher read the invocation and Pres Mike led the toast to Canada and Rotary.

TABLE TALK
I was informed that Dave Mitten's table talked about Forest fires and Stan Makita. This could have been very interesting,  not sure if this was about Stan Makita's hockey career or Stan Makita's donuts from Wayne's World the movie.

SERGEANT-AT-ARMS REPORT

Today we had 22 members present. This resulted in a 81 % attendance. Our special guests today were Anita Olney, Mellisa Olney our Guest Speaker and Shauna Proctor.

HAPPY-TOONIES

Your's truly was made a little happier today, sometimes arriving late has a few benefits. I was also happy that some nice person (s) who removed my computer from our car decided to return it.

Mike Bernard was happy that some radiographs taken of his daughter were all negative.

Larry Olney was happy to have some members of his family at lunch today. It seems that wherever Larry goes people always ask him " where is Anita ?"

Ken Denholm was happy to be back today, he has missed a few meetings. Ken was recently on a rough boat trip, most were below deck looking green but he and another person were on deck enjoying the ride. Ken is also in training for an Ironman competition. We wish him good luck in the competition, I suspect he will need a lot more than luck.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Pres Mike presented Ken Denholm with a 5 sapphire pin, this is an honour bestowed on a Rotarian based on his financial contributions made to the Rotary Foundation.
Allan Fox missed the windup barbecue and therefore missed a presentation for his past years on the board of Directors. Pres. Mike corrected that today.
The Golf Tournament on September 11, 2018  needs teams URGENTLY  !! Please work on promotion !!
We also need prizes, keep them coming.
Sean Carragher brought us up to date on the plans for Ribfest. When you read this Ribfest will be over for 2018. Sean was pleased with our club members involvement.

GUEST SPEAKER
Larry Olney introduced our Guest Speaker.Today's speaker was Melissa Olney Larry's favourite Granddaughter. Melissa spent 5 years after University trying to get a full time teaching job in Ontario. This was not to be so she travelled to Kenya, Thailand and England teaching.

Melissa travelled to the Dominican Republic on an Aid trip with her Grandfather Larry  and Grandmother Anita, there she taught a small class and was bitten with the teaching bug. In the last year she travelled to Kenya,  Thailand and England to teach. Melissa gave an excellent synopsis of her teaching stunt in Kenya, Thailand and England.  Melissa first went to Kenya and taught for a month. There the students take their education seriously. They were sometimes as many as 50 students in a class. Both the girls and the boys shave their head, this can sometimes make it difficult to differentiate the males and the females. They sometimes sit three to a desk. Teaching in the interior in Kenya means you cannot quickly look something up on Google.
Melissa also taught in Thailand, this was at a private school. The students had to take an exam to get into the Government Grade 1 classes.  In order to get into the best schools you had to perform well on the examination.
In England schools are ranked by an outside source and the teachers are randomly assessed.
Melissa clearly enjoys teaching and her enthusiasm is very obvious to anyone listening to her. This young lady would undoubtedly make quite an impact on her students.

Dave Mitten thanked Melissa Olney on our club's behalf.

Pres. Mike then gonged us back to work.
