TABLE TALK

We had lots of discussion at our table, as is usual. And, as is usual, i didn't take notes so all that was said is safely guarded in my unretrieveable memory. I would like to commend and thank Dean for noticing my coffee withdrawal symptoms and coming to the rescue.

GUEST SPEAKER
Peter Ashenhurst introduced our speaker today.

Our guest speaker  was Cameron Deerlove of Bridges To Belonging.  Bridges To Belonging was originally called Fascile: Independent Facilitation Waterloo Region.  They are a member of the Ontario Independent Facilitation Network. The core of their work is " person-directed planning and independent facilitation".

The organization provided very individualized programs by assessing the unique gifts, strengths and goals of their clients. They serve people with developmental and physical disabilities, mental health challenges, seniors, transitional aged youth - "anyone who faces barriers to a good life in the communtiy". Their clients are 18 or older.

The organization is supported by government grants, and fundraising (Ministry of Community and Social Services, United Way, KW Community Foundation etc.). There are on-going opportunities to help (i.e. financially, serving on Board of Directors). The annual budget is $1/2million, serving about 150 families with 14 staff (various part-time positions).

Cameron provided numerous examples of individuals being able to achieve goals (moving in to independent living, pursuing a job, hobby) through the help of Bridges to Belonging. The organization also provided a number of activities for the community including caregiver support groups, and The Buddy Choir.

More information on the organization is available through their website at www.bridgestobelonging.ca .

Mike thanked our speaker.

The meeting was adjourned.
